The Growth of World Population, 2000 BC to 2100

The history of human population is one of the most remarkable stories in the entire history of civilization. For most of human existence, population grew extremely slowly. Birth rates were high, but so were death rates, especially among infants and children. Famines, epidemics, warfare, inadequate sanitation, and limited food supplies repeatedly checked population growth. For thousands of years, humanity lived within what historians and demographers sometimes call a high mortality, high fertility world.

That pattern eventually changed. Agriculture allowed larger and more settled communities to develop. Cities, states, and civilizations emerged. Much later, improvements in agriculture, transportation, sanitation, medicine, public health, and living standards began to reduce mortality. During the nineteenth and especially the twentieth century, the result was an extraordinary acceleration in population growth. The world population, which had probably been measured in only hundreds of millions for most of recorded history, reached one billion around 1800, two billion in 1927, five billion in 1987, and eight billion in 2022. Yet the great irony of the modern population story is that the period of explosive growth is now coming to an end. The United Nations projects that world population will probably reach a peak of roughly 10.3 to 10.4 billion during the 2080s and then begin a gradual decline.  

It is important to begin with a qualification. Population figures for the ancient world are not census figures in the modern sense. There are no reliable worldwide records from 2000 BC. Ancient population estimates are reconstructed from archaeological evidence, settlement patterns, agricultural capacity, historical documents, and demographic models. Consequently, numbers for the ancient world should be understood as approximate estimates rather than precise measurements. Modern estimates become considerably more reliable, particularly after the nineteenth century, and the United Nations has produced systematic global estimates and projections for the modern period.  

The World Around 2000 BC

Around 2000 BC, the human population of the entire earth was probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 to 35 million people, although estimates vary. Humanity was already spread across much of the inhabited world, but population density remained extremely low compared with today.

The largest concentrations of people were found in the great agricultural civilizations of the ancient Near East, Egypt, South Asia, and China. Mesopotamia supported substantial populations because irrigation agriculture could produce large quantities of food. Egypt benefited from the extraordinarily productive Nile Valley. Communities were also becoming increasingly established in the Indus Valley, while China was developing increasingly complex agricultural societies along the Yellow River.

Elsewhere, populations were much smaller and more dispersed. Europe contained farming communities, but most of the continent remained rural and relatively sparsely populated. Africa contained numerous agricultural and pastoral societies, although population densities varied greatly. The Americas contained substantial and increasingly sophisticated societies, but their total population was still relatively small by later standards.

The key fact about the world of 2000 BC is that human beings had already become capable of creating civilizations, but they had not yet developed the economic, technological, and medical systems necessary to sustain very large populations.

For thousands of years afterward, population growth would remain painfully slow.

From 2000 BC to the Beginning of the Common Era

During the second and first millennia BC, the world population gradually increased. By approximately 1000 BC, estimates often place global population somewhere around 50 million, although uncertainty remains considerable. By the beginning of the Common Era, the population may have reached approximately 190 to 300 million.

This enormous increase over two thousand years should not be mistaken for modern population growth. The average annual rate of increase was tiny. Generations could pass without producing any obvious transformation in the overall size of humanity.

The reason was the demographic balance between births and deaths. Families generally had many children, but a substantial proportion of those children died before reaching adulthood. Women also faced high risks associated with pregnancy and childbirth. Epidemics periodically devastated communities. Warfare could destroy populations locally, while famine could produce sudden and severe mortality.

At the same time, agricultural societies gradually became more productive. Better tools, irrigation, crop selection, animal domestication, and accumulated agricultural knowledge allowed some regions to support larger populations. The growth of cities also created new concentrations of humanity.

Civilization therefore produced a paradox. It made possible larger populations, but it also created new vulnerabilities. Dense cities could become centers of disease. Large states could wage destructive wars. Concentrated agricultural societies could become dependent on particular crops and vulnerable to famine.

Population growth remained possible, but it was fragile.

The Population of the Roman and Han Worlds

Around the beginning of the Common Era, humanity may have numbered somewhere between 200 and 300 million.

Two enormous population centers dominated much of Eurasia. The Roman Empire controlled a vast portion of the Mediterranean world, while the Han dynasty governed much of China. Both supported sophisticated agricultural economies, extensive transportation networks, cities, taxation systems, and large administrative structures.

The Mediterranean world contained perhaps tens of millions of people, while China may also have contained tens of millions. India represented another major population center.

These civilizations demonstrate an important principle in population history. Large populations are not simply the consequence of large territories. They depend upon the ability of societies to produce, transport, store, and distribute food. Political stability, agricultural productivity, and infrastructure can therefore have enormous demographic consequences.

Yet ancient population growth remained vulnerable. Wars, political collapse, epidemic disease, and environmental disruption could reverse generations of growth.

The Middle Ages

After the decline of the Western Roman Empire, population patterns changed dramatically across Europe. Political fragmentation, warfare, economic disruption, and epidemics contributed to demographic contraction in some regions. Elsewhere, particularly in China, India, and the Islamic world, substantial populations continued to develop.

By approximately 500 AD, world population may have been around 200 to 250 million. By 1000 AD, it may have risen to roughly 250 to 350 million.

The medieval period illustrates another characteristic of the premodern world. Population could increase substantially when agricultural conditions were favorable, but growth was repeatedly interrupted by disasters.

Europe experienced agricultural expansion during portions of the High Middle Ages. Forests were cleared, new land was cultivated, farming techniques improved, and populations expanded. Towns grew, trade increased, and political institutions became more complex.

Then came catastrophe.

The Black Death of the fourteenth century killed an enormous proportion of the population of Europe and also affected populations across North Africa and Asia. Estimates differ substantially, but the demographic consequences were profound. Europe may have lost roughly one third to one half of its population in the worst affected regions.

The plague demonstrates why ancient and medieval populations grew so slowly. A population could spend centuries increasing and then lose a substantial portion of itself within a few years.

The World Around 1500

By approximately 1500, world population may have reached roughly 450 to 500 million.

This was the beginning of a new era. The great civilizations of Asia remained the largest centers of population, particularly China and India. Europe was becoming increasingly important economically and politically, and European maritime expansion was about to transform the demographic history of the entire planet.

The voyages of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries connected previously separated populations in an unprecedented way.

The resulting Columbian Exchange moved crops, animals, people, and diseases between the Old World and the Americas. Crops such as maize and potatoes eventually became important sources of calories in Europe, Africa, and Asia. At the same time, diseases introduced into the Americas caused catastrophic mortality among Indigenous peoples who had little previous exposure to many of those pathogens.

The demographic consequences were therefore contradictory. Global biological exchange eventually increased the food supply available to humanity, while epidemic disease caused devastating population losses in particular societies.

The World Around 1700

By 1700, the world population had reached approximately 600 million. The increase from 1500 had been substantial, but population growth was still slow by modern standards.

Our World in Data’s reconstruction places global population at roughly 595 million in 1700. The annual growth rate was only about 0.04 percent, illustrating just how slowly humanity was expanding.  

Yet the foundations for a dramatic transformation were beginning to appear.

Agricultural improvements were increasing food production in parts of Europe and Asia. International trade was expanding. Governments were becoming more capable of maintaining infrastructure. Scientific knowledge was beginning to develop rapidly. The Enlightenment encouraged new approaches to science, medicine, economics, and government.

Most importantly, humanity was beginning to learn how to reduce mortality.

The First Billion

The population reached approximately one billion around 1800 to 1805.

This was a historic turning point. It had taken humanity thousands of years to reach its first billion.

The next billion would take only about 125 years.

The transition was not caused by one invention. It emerged from a combination of agricultural improvement, better transportation, improved food distribution, declining mortality, public health measures, and eventually modern medicine.

The Industrial Revolution accelerated these changes. Mechanized production, railways, improved roads, steamships, and increasingly efficient agriculture allowed societies to produce and distribute resources on a scale that earlier civilizations could not have imagined.

The nineteenth century therefore marked the beginning of the modern population explosion.

The Nineteenth Century

Population growth accelerated dramatically during the nineteenth century.

The world passed one billion people around 1804. By 1900, the population had risen to approximately 1.6 billion.

Europe experienced especially rapid growth. Industrialization generated enormous economic and technological changes, while mortality gradually declined. Urban populations increased, although cities initially suffered from terrible sanitation and overcrowding.

Public health eventually transformed the demographic equation. Clean water, sewage systems, improved housing, vaccination, better nutrition, and greater understanding of infectious disease began reducing premature death.

The most important demographic change was not initially an increase in births. It was a reduction in deaths.

For thousands of years, societies had operated with high birth rates and high death rates. Modernity began breaking that equilibrium by reducing mortality while fertility remained high.

That created the conditions for rapid population growth.

The Twentieth Century: The Great Acceleration

The twentieth century produced the most extraordinary population increase in human history.

The world population was approximately 1.6 billion in 1900. It reached two billion around 1927, three billion around 1960, four billion around 1974, five billion around 1987, six billion around 1999, seven billion around 2011, and eight billion around 2022.

The speed of the transformation is astonishing. Humanity added roughly four billion people during the twentieth century alone.

This was not because human beings suddenly began having dramatically more children. In many parts of the world, fertility eventually began falling. Instead, the principal demographic transformation was that people were surviving.

Antibiotics, vaccines, modern surgery, improved maternal care, better sanitation, clean drinking water, improved nutrition, agricultural productivity, and public health programs dramatically reduced mortality.

Child survival improved particularly dramatically.

The consequences were enormous. When large numbers of children who previously would have died began surviving into adulthood, populations expanded rapidly.

The world population growth rate reached its historical maximum during the 1960s. The annual global growth rate peaked at roughly 2.3 percent around 1963, according to the reconstructed historical series. Since then, the growth rate has fallen by more than half.  

This is one of the most important facts about contemporary population history. The world is still adding people, but the rate at which it is doing so has been declining for more than half a century.

The Demographic Transition

The central concept for understanding the modern population story is the demographic transition.

Traditional societies generally have high fertility and high mortality. As societies become healthier and more prosperous, mortality falls first. Population therefore grows rapidly.

Later, families begin having fewer children. Education expands, infant mortality declines, women gain greater access to education and employment, contraception becomes available, urbanization increases, and the economic advantages of having very large families diminish.

Fertility therefore falls.

Eventually, both fertility and mortality become relatively low. Population growth slows and can eventually become negative.

This process is now occurring on a global scale, although countries are at very different stages.

The United Nations describes its current population projections through this demographic-transition framework, emphasizing the historical shift toward longer lives and smaller families.  

The World Population Today

The world passed eight billion people in 2022.

Today, humanity is therefore living at a population level unprecedented in the history of the species. Yet today’s population is also entering a demographic phase fundamentally different from that experienced by previous generations.

The population continues to grow, but global fertility has fallen dramatically.

The growth rate that exceeded two percent annually during the 1960s has fallen to below one percent. The number of children under five has already reached its global peak, around 2017, according to the UN based analysis presented by Our World in Data.  

This means that the future population story will increasingly be about aging rather than simply growth.

The central demographic question is gradually changing from “How many people will the earth have?” to “What will the age structure of those people look like?”

That distinction is extremely important.

The Population of the Twenty First Century

The twenty first century is likely to be divided into two very different demographic periods.

During the first part of the century, population will continue increasing because of demographic momentum. Even when families have fewer children, large generations born during periods of higher fertility continue moving through the reproductive ages.

The world’s population therefore does not immediately stop growing when fertility falls.

The United Nations’ 2024 projection places the global population at approximately nine billion around 2037 and approximately ten billion around 2058 to 2061, depending on the precise series and presentation. The population then continues rising more slowly toward a maximum during the 2080s.  

The UN’s current medium projection places the peak at slightly more than 10.4 billion around 2086. After that, global population is projected to begin declining.  

This represents a profound reversal of the demographic story of the twentieth century.

The Population Around 2050

By approximately 2050, the world is expected to contain somewhere around 9.7 billion people under the UN’s medium projection.

But the geographical distribution of population will have changed substantially.

Africa will account for an increasingly large share of humanity. Many European and East Asian societies will be considerably older and, in many cases, smaller. China has already entered a period of population decline, while several other countries in East Asia and Europe face sustained natural decrease.

India has become the world’s most populous country, while Africa is emerging as the principal center of global population growth.

This means that the twenty first century population story is not simply one of “more people.” It is a story of geographical redistribution.

Population growth is increasingly concentrated in countries where fertility remains comparatively high, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of South Asia.

At the same time, many developed countries face a very different problem: how to maintain economic and social systems with relatively small younger generations supporting increasingly large older populations.

The World Around 2060

Around the middle of the century, the world population is likely to approach ten billion.

At this point, the difference between twentieth century and twenty first century demography will become especially visible.

During the twentieth century, the major demographic challenge was accommodating rapidly expanding populations.

During the second half of the twenty first century, the major challenges will increasingly involve population aging, declining fertility, migration, labor shortages, pension systems, healthcare, and the changing balance between working-age and retired populations.

The population of children will no longer be growing rapidly. Indeed, the number of children worldwide is expected to remain relatively stable for a period and then decline.

Meanwhile, the number of elderly people will continue increasing because people are living longer.

The demographic future is therefore simultaneously a story of population growth and population aging.

The Population Peak

The most striking projection for the remainder of the century is that humanity is approaching a population peak.

According to the United Nations World Population Prospects 2024 medium scenario, global population is expected to peak around 2086 at approximately 10.4 billion people. After that, the global total is projected to decline gradually.  

This would mark the end of an extraordinary demographic era.

For roughly two centuries, global population growth accelerated dramatically. From approximately one billion people around 1800, humanity expanded to more than eight billion today and could reach more than ten billion before the century ends.

But this explosive growth appears to be temporary.

The world is approaching a new demographic equilibrium in which births and deaths become much closer in number.

Eventually, if fertility remains below the replacement level for long enough, deaths will exceed births and the global population will decline.

The World in 2100

The United Nations medium projection places global population in 2100 at approximately 10.2 billion, somewhat below the projected peak.

The difference between today’s population and the population at the end of the century is therefore much smaller than the difference between 1950 and today.

This is a remarkable change.

In 1950, the world had approximately 2.5 billion people. By 2022, it had reached eight billion. The population more than tripled in roughly seven decades.

From approximately 2022 to 2100, by contrast, the population is expected to increase by only about two billion and then begin declining.

The annual global growth rate is projected to approach zero and eventually become negative. The UN medium scenario therefore envisions a world in 2100 in which humanity is no longer experiencing population expansion.  

Africa and the Changing Center of Humanity

Perhaps the most important geographical dimension of the future population story is Africa.

For most of recorded history, the largest concentrations of humanity were in Asia. That remains true today. But Africa’s population is growing much more rapidly than the populations of Europe, China, Japan, and many other regions.

Consequently, the center of demographic growth is moving toward Africa.

Countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Angola, Niger, and others are expected to experience substantial population growth during the remainder of the century.

This does not mean that every African country will follow the same trajectory. Fertility is already falling in many African societies, and the timing and speed of the demographic transition will vary greatly.

Nevertheless, Africa will account for a growing share of the world’s population.

This transformation could have enormous implications for economics, education, urbanization, infrastructure, politics, migration, and global culture.

Europe and East Asia

The demographic future of Europe and East Asia is almost the opposite.

Many countries in these regions have fertility rates well below the level required to maintain population size without immigration.

Japan, South Korea, China, Italy, Germany, Spain, and several other countries are confronting population aging and, in some cases, significant population decline.

China represents one of the most important examples. After decades of rapid population growth, its population has entered a period of decline. The country’s demographic challenge is increasingly associated not with providing resources for a rapidly growing population, but with supporting an aging society while maintaining a sufficiently large working-age population.

Europe faces similar issues.

The result is that economic power, population size, and demographic momentum are becoming increasingly disconnected. A country can remain economically powerful while experiencing population decline.

Population and Migration

Migration will become increasingly important as demographic differences between countries grow.

A world in which some countries have rapidly growing working-age populations while others have shrinking labor forces creates strong economic incentives for migration.

Migration can partially compensate for low fertility in countries whose populations are aging. It can also create political and cultural tensions.

Consequently, immigration policy will increasingly be connected to demographic policy.

Population change is therefore not simply a matter of births and deaths. Migration can substantially alter the trajectory of individual countries, even though it does not change the total population of the world.

Population and Human Longevity

Another fundamental change is longevity.

For most of human history, average life expectancy was relatively low because so many people died during childhood and young adulthood.

Modern medicine changed that equation.

As infectious diseases became less deadly, nutrition improved, maternal mortality declined, and medical treatment became more effective, people began living much longer.

The consequence is that the future population will contain a historically unprecedented number of older people.

The demographic transformation of the twenty first century will therefore be defined not simply by fewer births but by longer lives.

Humanity is moving from a world dominated by children and young people toward a world in which older adults represent an increasingly significant proportion of the population.

Why Population Growth Is Ending

The end of rapid population growth does not mean that humanity is running out of room.

Rather, it reflects a fundamental change in reproductive behavior.

Women in many parts of the world now have substantially fewer children than their mothers and grandmothers did. Education, urbanization, contraception, declining infant mortality, later marriage, women’s participation in the workforce, and changing economic expectations have all contributed to this transformation.

Once families become confident that most of their children will survive, they generally do not need to have very large numbers of children.

The demographic transition therefore represents one of the deepest social transformations in human history.

The world has moved from a condition in which population was constrained primarily by death to one in which population is increasingly constrained by fertility.

The Meaning of the Entire Population Story

Seen across four thousand years, the history of population has three great chapters.

The first was the ancient and medieval world, when humanity remained relatively small because high mortality continually limited population growth.

The second was the modern population explosion, beginning roughly two centuries ago, when improvements in food production, sanitation, medicine, public health, and living conditions caused mortality to fall dramatically while fertility remained high.

The third is the demographic transition now unfolding, in which fertility is falling, population growth is slowing, populations are aging, and global population is approaching a peak.

The numbers make the transformation extraordinary.

Around 2000 BC, perhaps 30 million people inhabited the earth.

Around the beginning of the Common Era, there may have been approximately 200 to 300 million.

Around 1500, there may have been roughly 450 to 500 million.

Around 1700, approximately 600 million.

Around 1800, approximately one billion.

Around 1900, approximately 1.6 billion.

Around 1950, approximately 2.5 billion.

Around 2000, approximately 6.1 billion.

In 2022, humanity passed eight billion.

By the late 2050s or early 2060s, the world is projected to approach ten billion.

By approximately 2086, according to the UN medium projection, global population may peak at about 10.4 billion.

By 2100, it may have fallen slightly to around 10.2 billion.  

The numbers reveal something even more remarkable than the growth itself. Humanity’s population did not simply increase steadily. It underwent an enormous demographic transformation. For thousands of years, population growth was extremely slow. Then, within a few generations, the human population multiplied at a speed never previously experienced. Now that acceleration is beginning to reverse.

Looking Beyond 2100

The year 2100 should not be regarded as a precise endpoint. Population projections become increasingly uncertain the farther they extend into the future.

The most important unknown is fertility.

Small differences in the average number of children women have can produce enormous differences in population over several generations. A fertility rate slightly above replacement can eventually produce substantial population growth. A fertility rate slightly below replacement can eventually produce substantial population decline.

Migration is also difficult to predict at the national level, while future mortality depends on medical advances, public health, climate conditions, economic development, and unforeseen diseases.

The United Nations therefore treats its projections as scenarios rather than predictions of an inevitable future. The UN’s 2024 revision provides multiple plausible outcomes through 2100, with the medium scenario representing its central projection.  

There is some reason for confidence in medium-term projections. Historical comparisons show that many previous UN global population projections have been relatively close to later estimates, although uncertainty increases substantially over longer periods and individual countries can diverge considerably from global trends.  

The Larger Historical Perspective

Perhaps the most profound lesson of population history is that the human population is not simply following a continuous upward trajectory.

For most of history, humanity lived in a demographic equilibrium characterized by high fertility and high mortality. Modern civilization disrupted that equilibrium by allowing people to survive longer and more children to reach adulthood. That created the great population explosion of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

But modernization eventually changes fertility as well as mortality.

The result is a new equilibrium.

Humanity has therefore moved from a world of perhaps tens of millions of people in the ancient agricultural era, to hundreds of millions in the classical and medieval worlds, to billions in the modern world, and finally toward a future in which the global population may stabilize at approximately ten billion and then gradually decline.

The most extraordinary part of this story is not simply that there are now more than eight billion human beings. It is that the conditions that produced such rapid growth are themselves disappearing.

The great demographic story of the twentieth century was the multiplication of humanity.

The great demographic story of the twenty first century will be the slowing, aging, redistribution, and eventual stabilization of humanity.

And if the present projections prove broadly correct, the civilization of the twenty second century will inherit a world in which the central population question is no longer how to accommodate an ever-growing number of people, but how humanity chooses to live in a world where population growth has finally come to an end.
