AM I Saved _1_Text
Am I Saved? - Christian Soteriology - Doctrine of Salvation
Psalm 37:39
“The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD, he is their stronghold in times of trouble.”
Psalm 23
The LORD is my shepherd I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters; He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of darkness (death), I fear no evil; For you are with me; Your rod and your staff they comfort me; You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, And I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
Joel 2:32
“And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved;”
Mark 10:17-22
As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? Jesus said to him . . . “You know the commandments: “You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honor you father and mother.”He said to Jesus, “Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth” Jesus looking at him loved him and said,“You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” When he heard this, the man was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions.
Luke 10: 25-28
Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he said, “what must I do to inherit eternal life. Jesus replied to him, “What is written in the law? What do you read there?” He answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” And Jesus said to him,“You have given the correct answer; do this, and you will live.”
Acts 16:30-31
Then (the jailer) brought (Paul & Silas) outside and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” Paul answered, “Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
Ephesians 2: 8-9
“For grace you have been saved through faith, And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God – not the result of works, so that no one may boast.”
John 14: 6

Revelation 21:1-5a
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look, the home of God is among humans. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them; He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and weeping and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away.” And the One who was seated on the throne said,“Behold, I am making all things new.”

The Human Conundrum: Sin
=========================================
In sovereign love God created the world good and makes everyone equally in God’s image male and female, of every race and people, to live as one community. But we rebel against God; we hide from our Creator. Ignoring God’s commandments, we violate the image of God in others and ourselves, accept lies as truth, exploit neighbor and nature, and threaten death to the planet entrusted to our care.We deserve God’s condemnation.

==============================================
What is Sin?
“I know it when I see it” Justice Potter Stewart, United States Supreme Court. 1964 Jacobelis vs Ohio
3 Types of Sin
The Original Sin
Participation in Structural Sin
Engaging in Personal Sin
The Original Sin
“So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and then knew that they were naked . . .
Therefore, the LORD God sent him forth from the Garden of Eden.” Genesis Chapter 1 (excerpts)
Doctrine of Original Sin
Sin is passed down through every generation.
Sin universally afflicts all people everywhere.
Sin is inevitable and unavoidable.
We will be held accountable for our sins.
The Original Sin
“Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death came through sin, and so death spread to all because all have sinned. . .Therefore, just as one man’s trespass led to condemnation for all, so one man’s act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all. For just as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.”
Romans 5 (excerpts)
The Original Sin
“The doctrine of Original Sin should be understood as a åesriptive observation, and not a prescriptive inevitability.”
Prof. Edward A Dowey, Jr Princeton Theological Seminary
Structural Sin
Structural Sin refers to the Systemic and Institutionalized practices within a society that are contrary to God’s will
Create Formal Inequalities
Promote Injustice
Perpetuate Discrimination
Fosters Oppression and Suffering
De-values some while giving advantages to others
Isaiah 10:1-3
“Woe to you who legislate evil, who make laws that victimize, laws that make misery for the poor, that rob destitute people of their dignity, exploiting defenseless widows, taking advantage of homeless children. What will you have to say on Judgement Day? Who will you cry out to for help? What good will your money do you?”
Structural Sin Examples
Educational Systems that priorities resources to some children but not others. Political Systems that manipulate laws for the benefit of a few. Economic Systems that promote unfair employment, earnings, and tax advantages to a privileged group. Racial Discrimination that devalues people based upon skin color. Gender Discrimination that gives unfair advantages to one gender. Healthcare Systems that prioritize the well-being of some people to the detriment of others.
Personal Sin
Breaking the Commandments “Thou shall
not . . .”
The many ways we break covenant with God through our behaviors and intentions.
“Now the works of the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, envy drunkenness, carousing, and things like these. I am warning you, as I warned you before: those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”
Paul, the Apostle Letter to the Galatians, Chapter 5
Sins of Commission
Things we do . . . lie, cheat, murder, fraud, infidelity.
Jesus throwing out the corrupt businessmen from the Temple
Sins of Omission
Things we fail to do . . .offer compassion, assist the needy, feed the hungry.
The Parable of the Good Samaritan
Imago Dei
“We must take sin very seriously, but not too seriously.
Contrary to the impression we are sometimes given, sin is not the main theme nor the central focus of the Christian faith.”
“The central truth is not that we are sinners, but that we are human beings created in God’s image.
Sin distorts, twists, corrupts, and contradicts this truth, but it does not change us into something other than what God created us to be. Sin is not stronger than God.”
