The Peaceable Kingdom
John August Swanson
What
about…
Destruction and Division?
Divided Hearts?
Fragmented Families?
Broken Nations?
Fractured Societies?
How can Jesus possibly be
KING of this?
Only the
Heart of the Suffering Jesus was incapable of Moral Rupture, despite being
touched by the sin of the world.
That heart is the heart of the King who rules as
Human and Divine, Sacrifice and Priest,
Crucified and Reigning!
The
People’s King
(Rex Gentium)
* The People are now the Sanctuary!
* We are the Priesthood of Believers and
also a living sacrifice!
* We Reign with Christ, to whom we are
also subject, and with whom we are one.
* The Church has a cornerstone and also Living Stones who give their lives,
their gifts as an offering to Christ the King
O Emmanuel , you are our king and judge, the One whom peoples await and their salvation. O come and save us, lord , our God.
O Emmanuel “God-with-us”
O Emmanuel!
You are our King and judge
The One whom the people await and their Savior.
O Come and save us, Lord, our God!
The IMMANANCE of God
is the Presence of Salvation!
Christ was Present at Creation
Christ was Present in the Burning Bush
Christ sprang from the broken line of Jesse
Christ was inheritor of the Key of David
Christ radiates God’s Justice like the Sun
Christ reigns over death as King of All Peoples
Christ came as a Man to dwell with us
O Emmanuel, God with Us
u Discouragement and Despair
u Matthew 26: 38-40 Jesus in his humanity experienced what in his divinity he never needed: someone to stand by you.
u Acts 18: 9-10 Paul is buoyed up
u Divine Solidarity God is FOR us!
Emmanuel
is
Divine Compassion
u Just like we desire God with Us, Jesus desires us to be with Him.
u In Community
u In Spirit
u In Communion
u It’s TWO directions
u It’s got MAJOR implications
u Our relationship to suffering is so longer in isolation
u Emmanuel is present with us as the Spirit
Emmanuel
is
Our Advocate
u We think of Emmanuel as Baby Jesus lying in a manger. God in human form.
u Yes….AND! When God is with us, (here and now), God’s presence is with us as the Holy Spirit, or Paraclete, which means Advocate, Intercessor, Counselor and even Protector.
u It is by this presence within that God is FOR us and WITH us. The Holy Spirit is our guide and Christ’s presence is near…
u Convicting us of sin
u Protecting us and the Church
u Recalling His teachings and promises
u Achieving God’s intent on earth
O
Emmanuel
We address the O Antiphon
to Christ alone in our worship
u There is no passage out from God nor back again to Him without the Son. No knowledge of the Father, no life in the Spirit apart from Christ. No communion with the divine, no transformation of humanity, to liberation from sin, no hope of heaven, no fulfilment of scripture, nor of the promises nor covenants with him. No God-with-us. No Emmanuel without Mary’s child. Hence the extraordinary rejoicing which his very name inspires and which his birth invites. This title is the entire heart of the Christian faith…and the center of God’s redemptive plan. -Oliver Treanor
